Extending throughout the prefectures of Yamanashi, Tokyo, Saitama and Nagano, this park claims more than 20 peaks of over 6,557 ft, but no volcanoes. Mt. Kobushigatake (8,141 ft) and Mt. Kumotori (6,620 ft) offer a new challenge even to the seasoned climber. Mt. Daibosatsurei (7,311 ft), made famous by one of Kaizan Nakazato’s novels, has routes for both standard mountain climbing and hiking. Two of Japan’s most beautiful ravines, Mitake-Shosenkyo and Nishizawa, are beautiful in the lively greenery of spring, but their true splendor comes out in autumn, when the streams reflect unforgettable hues on the leaves as they change colors. Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, easily accessed from the Tokyo area, is an ideal place for nature lovers to observe an irresistibly wide variety of plant, bird, and insect species in their natural habitat--not to mention many wild animals like deer, monkeys, and squirrels.

Exciting natural sculpture--such as steep precipices that tower over crystal clear streams running through giant, oddly shaped rocks--distinguishes Mitake-Shosenkyo Ravine as one of Japan's most gorgeous sites. This masterpiece was sculpted by the gradual erosion of granite rock by the Arakawa river flowing form the Oku-chichibu mountains. Since completion of the Shosenkyo Green Line and the walking path, this spectacular site can be enjoyed by anyone in any season.

You will be enchanted by the rich, emerald waters, the tiered waterfalls of Nanatsugama-Godan-no-Taki, and the huge Oketsu Cave carved out by the raging water flow. You can also enjoy the thrills of crossing a wooden bridge high above the ravine. The fresh, bright green of spring, the rhododendron flowers of summer, and especially the kaleidoscopic blaze of autumn leaves--coupled with breathtaking waterfalls--attest to the true artistry of Mother Nature.
